Named one of the best family beaches in the country by National Geographic Traveler magazine, Holden Beach offers small-town charm and unspoiled beauty. With over 11 miles of clean, sandy beaches and a year around moderate temperature, the island attracts many visitors who want to experience a unique, quiet, family-oriented atmosphere. Holden Beach is the perfect spot for biking, jogging, shelling, beachcombing, sailing or simply enjoying the latest best seller with a beverage in your hand and your bottom in the sand.
Navigate a kayak or canoe along the picturesque tidal saltmarsh of the Intracoastal Waterway, and keep watch, for you may glimpse endangered loggerhead sea turtles as they surface for air. The island is a sea turtle habitat and during the hatching season (May to October) those who don't mind staying up late into the night can witness one of nature's most interesting pleasures – watching hundreds of small sea turtles "boil" out of the sand and march into the ocean waves. In this naturalist’s—and wildlife—haven, you’re sure to find something to delight your whole family—from spotting dolphins in the surf to playfully chasing ghost crabs with flashlights during an evening stroll. Have lunch on-the-deck at one of several restaurants that sit beside the Intracoastal Waterway. Here, you can watch shrimp boats cruise by as they make their way to and from the ocean. And, don’t miss the North Carolina Festival by the Sea, a celebration with arts, crafts and seafood that draws people from all over.
Holden Beach, a south facing island where the sun rises on your left and sets on your right, is located on the southern coast of North Carolina. The island's unique position means that there is sun on the beach no matter what time of day, statistically speaking. Holden Beach also is a boater's paradise! Launch your craft from the Intracoastal Waterway and swing through the inlet heading due east for the Gulf Stream waters. If you don't have a boat, there are several charters ready when you are. Do it all, or do nothing at all. What a choice!
