Oak Island

Just a short drive across the scenic bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway brings you to the beach vacation spot of Oak Island. Ten miles of white sand, uncrowded beaches, family-oriented amusements and attractions and a variety of accommodations from small motels, on the beach and off, to luxurious single-family homes for vacation rental directly oceanfront.

This is the North Carolina beach you’ve seen in glossy brochures, advertisements and on postcards. Maybe you’ve even pictured yourself being here with a cold beverage in your hand and your bottom in the sand. Fulfill your nostalgic vision with leisurely bicycle rides to play mini-golf and get a double scoop ice cream cone.

But with all its other diversions, the ocean is always the main attraction and center of attention with more than 60 public-beach access points, two fishing piers, two marinas and three public boat and canoe ramps. In addition, the private beach club for St. James Plantation is located on Oak Island. Available to all property owners in St. James, St. James By The Sea has private parking, a swimming pool, a picnicking deck overlooking the pool and the ocean and indoor showers and toilets, no small advantage if you have the grandchildren with you.

Bring or rent a board and surf the gentle waves, or maybe a kayak and explore the tidal marshes between Oak Island and the mainland, or just walk in the sand at sunrise or sunset. Life is easy and good.
